Dairy, Horses & Small Animals

Dairy

The best milk in the region can be found at the Stonewall Farm dairy. We are proud to announce that our herd and dairy staff received the Top Quality Award on December 8, 2003, from Agri-Mark. This is not just any award. This award is presented to the best dairy in the region; which is made up of 104 farms in New Hampshire and Vermont. Stonewall Farm's dairy staff have consistently proven their ability to meet high standards for cleanliness of equipment, quality of milk and performance of our herd. It is also based on more technical results such as bacterial and somatic cell counts. Congratulations to the dairy staff and all of the girls in the barn. They really know what they're doing!

STONEWALL FARM RECEIVES AGRI-MARK MILK QUALITY AWARD

Many local people know that Stonewall Farm produces the highest quality milk around. Now it's official. The non-profit working farm and education center was awarded Agri-Mark's 2003 First Place Quality Award for Region 9, which encompasses 104 farms in New Hampshire and Vermont. The award was made December 9, 2003 at Agri-Mark's annual Region 9 meeting in Bethel, Vermont.

Stonewall Farm earned the award based on its outstanding performance in a comprehensive evaluation of its herd and its facilities by Agri-Mark, New England's largest dairy cooperative. The farm scored 100 out of a possible 100 points.

"Ensuring our milk and the farms that produce it are of the highest quality is very important to Agri-Mark," said Erin Robblee, Agri-Mark Field Representative for Southern New Hampshire. "We like to recognize those farms that meet or exceed our high standards. Stonewall Farm demonstrated its commitment to quality by earning a perfect score."

Stonewall Farm is the last dairy farm in Keene and has a variety of educational and recreational programs open to the public year-round.

The Agri-Mark dairy cooperative is the largest supplier of milk in New England, marketing more than 300 million gallons of farm fresh milk each year for more than 1,400 of the region's dairy farm families. Agri-Mark serves members whose farms are located in all six New England states and New York State. Other Resources: Other Resources:

DID YOU KNOW...When migrant European tribes settled the Rhine Delta region called The Netherlands close to 2,000 years ago, they wanted animals that would make the best use of the land. The black animals and white cows of the Batavians and Friesians were bred and strictly culled to produce animals that were the most efficient, producing the most milk with limited feed resources. These animals genetically evolved into the efficient, high producing black-and-white dairy cow, known as the Holstein-Friesian. Today more than 19 million animals are registered in the Holstein Association's herdbook. The ancestry of most of these animals can be traced to animals originally imported from the Netherlands.

Holsteins are large, stylish animals with color patterns of black and white or red and white. A healthy Holstein calf weighs 90 pounds or more at birth. A mature Holstein cow weighs about 1,500 pounds and stands 58 inches tall at the shoulder. Holstein heifers can be bred at 13 months of age, when they weigh about 800 pounds. It is desirable to have Holstein females calve for the first time between 23 and 26 months of age. Holstein gestation is approximately nine months. Holsteins can now be found on every continent and in almost every country. Such convincing evidence of genetic superiority has created an active export market for Holstein genetics. Currently, live Holstein females and males and frozen embryos and semen are being exported to more than 50 countries and used extensively to improve foreign food supplies and dairy producer incomes.
