School Programs 2007 - 2008

Stonewall Farm strives to be a valuable resource to area schools while still meeting their educational mission of connecting people to the land and the role of local agriculture in their lives.  We are always willing to discuss how we can adapt or adjust our programs to meet the needs of local teachers.  If you have any questions, would like us to adapt a program to a different age or group size, or desire a custom program based on a topic you don't see available, please call us!  603.357.7278.

Grades 3 to 6

Farm to Table
Bring your students back to the roots of where our food comes from as you bake bread from scratch, harvest from our garden, milk a cow, make butter and collect eggs.  We'll end the day with a tasty light meal of fresh baked bread and seasonable garden fare.  This program is a sensory explosion of tastes, smells and textures as we explore each area of the farm and discuss the work of food production.  Self esteem soars as students proudly present the dishes they helped prepare.

Available: Sept. - Nov. & May - Jun.

Program Length: 4 hours

Fee: $10/ student, $120 minimum

Churn, Turn and Learn
Students love this hands-on program that gives them a real sense of what life was like in the mid-1800s.  We will learn how important sheep were to early New England residents, and how complicated a simple treat like cornbread was to make.  Students then get to travel back in time and experience farm life with Stonewall's first farming family!

Snowshoe Adventure
Get your students active during these long, dark months by bringing them out to the farm for a snowshoe adventure! Come explore on the Farm's own fleet of snowshoes and learn about winter ecology as you're guided through the forest by one of our instructors. Depending on the ability level of the group we may venture off the trail into the wild places unexplorable in summer in search of animal tracks and other signs to interpret. Then return to the learning center to share your discoveries and warm up with some hot cocoa!

Available: Dec. - Feb. (weather permitting)
Group Maximum Size: 30 students maximum
Program Length: 2 hour program
Fee: $6.00 per student / $72 minimum

Old Fashioned Ice Harvesting
Experience a piece of New England history as you learn about harvesting ice, the earliest 'crop' of the year.  Before the days of refrigeration, the ice man used to travel through neighbor hoods delivering ice for family ice boxes.  Get a guided tour through our extensive museum display and use genuine antique tools to harvest a block from our pond!  Students will leave with a better understanding and respect for this traditional New England industry.

Available: February
Group Maximum Size: 30 students maximum
Program Length: 2 hour program
Fee: $6.00 per student / $90 minimum

Maple Madness
Experience a New England tradition in this sweet program!  Students learn how to identify a sugar maple, tap a tree, and turn the sweet sap into even sweeter syrup.  We'll provide examples of how sugaring has been done through the ages, take a tour through the sugarhouse, sample a sweet treat of syrup and ice cream and top it all off with a hayride through the sugarbush!

Pond and Forest
Students will love this investigative program!  Our instructors will discuss how to safely capture and handle various creatures as we net insects and amphibians from our wetlands, and roll logs in search of some common but fascinating forest decomposers.  We'll discuss the various adaptations of all we find, and consider the important role they play in their habitat.  This exciting  program focuses on a variety of science concepts such as decomposition, adaptations, life cycles and habitat.
