Tips for a Successful Field Trip!

Larger Group Sizes

Many of our programs have maximum group sizes of 30 or less students in order to maintain quality learning experiences for your students.  If you have a larger group, we can schedule two back to back programs and rotate your larger group through the program.  When not involved with our educators, we can provide space for your own activities, scavenger hunts, and self-guided trail and tour booklets so you and your students can explore the farm on your own.

Picnics and Play

We have several picnic table areas, plenty of grassy picnic spaces, and indoor floor space available for group lunches.  We recommend you leave lunches on the bus or in vehicles, or ask us for an indoor space to store them.  Red squirrels and chickens are notorious lunch theives!  Although our programs generally run 1 1/2 - 2 hours, you can easily make Stonewall a day-long destination by providing time to explore in small chaperoned groups, or exploring our barns and trails on your own.

Food and Animal Allergies

Many of our programs involve close contact with farm animals, insects and food items.  If you have a student with a known allergy please let us know ahead of time so we can adapt the activities as needed.  Because we are not legal able to administer medications of any kind we do not have items such as 'Sting-ease' available.  We can provide an ice pack for stings, but recommend you bring your own first aid kit from school.

Clothing, Name Tags and footwear

Only severe weather situations cause us to cancel or adapt our programs to the indoors.  Please advise your students to dress comfortably in clothing appropriate for current weather conditions.  Footwear should be sturdy and with closed toes, not sandles.  Name tags with clear large lettering help our instructors connect to your students and call them by name when asking questions.  In winter, name tags often stick much better to fuzzy hats than to nylon winter coats.
