School Programs 2007 - 2008

Stonewall Farm strives to be a valuable resource to area schools while still meeting their educational mission of connecting people to the land and the role of local agriculture in their lives.  We are always willing to discuss how we can adapt or adjust our programs to meet the needs of local teachers.  If you have any questions, would like us to adapt a program to a different age or group size, or desire a custom program based on a topic you don't see available, please call us!  603.357.7278.

Use professional nets to collect specimens from our fields and determine which are insects and which are not. During a visit to our garden, students participate in hand collecting insect pests while learning how insects help AND hinder our crops. To round out their visit, students learn to use the power of observation to make scientific drawings to learn more about some common creepy crawlies!.

Exploring the Roots of Our Food
Milk a cow by hand! Make and taste butter! Explore the dairy barn, learn about compost, and plant a seed to take home as you learn about where our food is produced.  We will explore our garden to see what is growing and who lives there, and tour our dairy barn where students will meet one of our milkers up close, and visit with our heifers (young cows) who just love to be pet!  A great trip to experience first hand how some common food items are produced.

Program Length: 1-1/2 hour program
Fee: $6.00 per student/ $72.00 minimum

Animals in Winter
Meet 'Freddy the Fox' and his friends as you explore the farm and learn what wild creatures make their home here.  Experiment with insulation, venture beneath the snow in our subnivian zone and visit our beaver lodge as you learn how different animals adapt to winter.  We will also learn more about the tracks of various animals in our hands on track trays, and hopefully see some in the snow as we explore!

Maple Madness
Experience a New England tradition in this sweet program!  Students learn how to identify a sugar maple, tap a tree, and turn the sweet sap into even sweeter syrup!  We'll provide examples of how sugaring has been done through the ages, take a tour through the sugarhouse, sample a sweet treat of syrup and ice cream and top it all off with a hayride through the sugarbush!

Farm Animal Tour
Visit with each of our farm animals and learn what they eat and how we care for them.  Most important, learn how they 'earn their keep' at the farm by providing specific products or services.  Students will heave an opportunity to visit with our animals up close, including milking a cow, and manipulating fiber into yarn.  Finish the day with a fabulous hayride!

Wetland Wonders
Life cycles, habitat and adaptations are just some of the things students can learn while exploring a wetland.  In this science oriented program students become scientists and record observations of wetland creatures in their own field journals.  We've extended the time to 2 hours to include an opportunity for your students to use nets and collect specimens from our small dipping pond.  We'll discuss their adaptations and how to observe them respectfully.
Available: May, June
Group Maximum Size: 40 students
Program Length: 2 hour program
